Give your office a facelift

Ignition

According to Gallup, Americans that are employed full time report working an average of 47 hours per week, with 39% putting in at least 50 hours per week.1 With us spending so much time at work, and many of us spending that time in our offices rather than out on the road, the way we feel about our work environment is of paramount importance. You probably already have pictures of your wife/kids/dog/cat/friends gracing your walls already, so I’m going to look at some things that maybe you haven’t already thought about.

First things first, if you’ve been putting off getting a new office chair, that’s probably the best place to start. Unless you’re lucky enough to have a sit-to-stand desk, you’re likely confined to your chair for much of the day. Having a comfortable chair helps keep you from being distracted by physical discomfort and more focused on your work. You also don’t have to break the bank to get something that’s functional and comfortable. Personally, I use the Mesh-back Hon Ignition and it is absolutely fabulous. I’d also recommend pretty much anything from Eurotech. They put a huge emphasRolodexis on ergonomics and office comfort, and it shows in their product line.

Another way to revamp your work space is to accessorize a bit! Creatively designed tape dispensers, Post-it Note holders, and staplers can do a lot to make your office more “you.” As far as tech accessories go, the Victor PH600, is a must-have in my book. It’s a smart phone/tablet cradle that acts as a USB hub and can even charge your device. Needing to make some room on your desk? The Rolodex Mesh 3 Tier Desk Shelf saved my desk. It can be mounted to the wall with just a couple of thumb tacks.

Lastly, I’d recommend throwing a nice little plant somewhere in your office. My wife made the suggestion to me, and while I scoffed at the idea at first, it’s been nice to have a little green sitting on my window sill. Plants, as I’m sure you remember, absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. What you might not know is that plants also can fight colds, relieve stress, improve concentration, and more!2 If you’re in a cubicle or have an office without a window, make sure you get one that does ok in low-sunlight environments. Oh, and don’t forget to water it before you leave for the weekend!!

I hope this helps give you a jump start! There are TONS of ways that you can personalize your office space. If you have any ideas or have things you’ve already done, drop a line in the comments.
